I love animated films. And this isn’t just including Disney, either. Other companies such as FOX have had their fair hand in the animated movie era.
I say Era, because there really aren’t any hand-drawn animated films around anymore. At least, any decent ones. (I don’t count Disney’s Princess and the Frog because I haven’t seen it). Most of the animated films nowadays are rendered in 3D. This is all fair and good, but I feel like they’ve lost their magic since I was a wee little thing.
What a lot of these 3D animated movies lack is a magical component that drove me to love all my 80s, 90s (and earlier) animated films. This magical component is Song. Musical numbers you can be taken away by, drawn into a different world. Melodies that get stuck in your head for days at a time. Tunes you can be sucked into, delighted by, even cry over. (okay let’s not get carried away now)
I have to say, this is one of the reasons I absolutely love the older hand-drawn animated movies. It was a key element that further drove me into the story, and let me know how the characters were feeling. Or what they wanted in their lives. Or just a random song to pad the movie.
I was going to list my top five animated musical numbers, but everyone always lists Disney. So, this is my top five songs from animated films (almost) no one remembers. Let’s start!
